Let's talk about Primer

If you want to ensure your makeup stays flawless all day long, a primer is highly recommended. For many, this is a familiar product, but after a little survey, I find that almost no one uses it daily. And yet, it can truly be a lifesaver for your beautiful makeup look. After reading this blog, you'll never want to be without it, just like us. We’ll address the most common questions about primers that we've heard.

What does a primer do?
When you’re painting a wall, you need to ensure a good base layer so that the paint adheres better. This is actually exactly the same when it comes to makeup. A good base ensures that other products adhere better and stay put all day as they should. A primer creates a sort of ‘layer’ on your skin. It’s often thought that a primer seals the skin, but that’s not the case. You can think of it as a ‘mesh’ that allows certain substances to pass through.

How does a primer work?
There are different types of primers for every skin type. There are gels, creams, powders (this one is a favorite!), or oils that are usually very lightweight. Pay close attention to your own skin when choosing a primer. There are also primers that hydrate your skin or mattify it. Do you have a lot of red spots? Then a primer with a green undertone might be the solution for you. There’s actually a perfect primer for everyone.

Most primers contain silicones. There are primers on the market that fill in fine lines and deep wrinkles. This colorless substance sits on your skin and fills in lines and imperfections, making them less noticeable. (The Anti-Wrinkle primer from Gosh is brilliant.) The silicones help keep allergens and irritants from reaching the skin. On the other hand, they also make it harder for moisture to escape, keeping your skin hydrated. Silicones are not recommended for your hair, but they can do wonders for your skin. It’s still very important to wash them off properly in the evening.

How do you use a primer?
You use primer as a base. After you’ve cleansed your skin in the morning and applied your day cream, grab the primer. Simply spread it over your face with your fingers, a brush, or a sponge and let it dry for a moment. After that, you can apply your foundation and the rest of your makeup. Not using foundation? A primer can still be valuable. Most primers are transparent and will still make your skin look nicer and smoother.

Our tips and tricks

  • During the warm days ahead, a primer is incredibly nice. You won’t have to worry about a shiny face at the end of the day.
  • There are also primers available with SPF, perfect for summer.
  • The BB Creams from Gosh are a primer, moisturizer, and foundation in one. That saves a lot of separate products.
  • Make sure the ingredients in your primer work well with your favorite foundation. Sometimes certain combinations can cause the foundation to ‘pill’ or not adhere well at all. Keep trying and practicing!

A primer ensures that your makeup looks just as good in the evening as it did when you first applied it. It hydrates, mattifies, and protects your skin. Need we say more? We certainly can’t live without it.

Have fun finding your perfect primer!
