Several cosmetics brands advertise: cruelty-free makeup. But vegetarian and vegan options are also becoming more common (thankfully!). When can makeup claim one of these labels? This week is Animal Day, so let's take a moment to reflect on these products for our little fluffy friends.
Cruelty-free makeup
Unfortunately, animal testing for cosmetics still occurs, but thankfully it's happening less and less. In the Netherlands, animal testing has been banned for a while, but some cosmetics brands still sell makeup that is tested on animals. In China, for example, it is even mandatory to test makeup on animals before it can be sold in stores. Not okay. So always check where your makeup comes from. Makeup from Europe is generally (often) free from animal testing.
Certification
That's why a certification has been established to show that a product has not been tested on animals. Be careful! Some brands try to mislead you by placing a bunny on their logo. This is allowed, but it doesn't automatically mean that the product is cruelty-free. Look for a genuine certification that states 'cruelty free' or 'vegan' to be sure.
Did you know that not all cruelty-free makeup is necessarily free from animal suffering? That might sound a bit strange. But even if products are not tested on animals, animals may still have suffered due to the ingredients used in the product. If you want to avoid this as well, you should choose products that are vegan or (even better) vegetarian.
Vegan and vegetarian makeup
First of all, it's important to know which ingredients are involved. Some vegetarian cosmetic products do not involve animal suffering. However, there are also cosmetics that contain animal products (such as carmine, elastin, and keratin) where animal suffering is involved. And yet, these products are still considered vegetarian.
If you really want to avoid all of this, play it safe and only use vegan products. Vegan makeup contains no animal ingredients at all and is therefore 100% free from animal suffering. These brands can be recognized by a vegan certification on the packaging.
